Times of changes.
The Covid-19 virus outbreak has led to cancellations and postponements in the artworld around the globe, with all kinds of art exhibitions, shows, and major fairs affected. Most of my planned exhibitions in Japan, Austria and Germany have been cancelled as well.
Although I’m really disappointed, sad and devastated – Now is the time to focus on what’s really important! We have to remain calm, focus on our family and loved ones, stay inside and wait for better times.
But let us also use this time to raise awareness and speak up. As an artist I want to use this time cherishing the things that mean the most to me- like producing art as a medium to express opinions, give mutual support or to simply spread positivity. Let’s take these special circumstances as an opportunity to be grateful for the things and people we have in our lives! Take time for yourself and keep in mind that kindness and solidarity always goes a long way! I’m sending all my greetings out to you and your families and hope that you’ll stay healthy!
Please make sure for follow my instagram account @knaut_contemporary for daily stories, updates, videos from my studio. Especially in these times of social distancing it’s a great way to stay connected.

// COME ON BABY LIGHT MY FIRE. Group show, Valerius art gallery, Luxembourg. 19.9.-26.10.2019//
Was macht »Würde« aus?

“Displacement: A boat in a city. In a studio on the first floor of a concrete building in downtown Johannesburg. Going nowhere and yet always on its way. Between travelling and arriving, between being at home and being a stranger, between being and becoming. In a city that challenges me, sometimes uncomfortably so, and yet entices me to reinvent myself, to place myself anew.” ( Knaut, 2017)
In this Masters exhibition, Manuela Karin Knaut, artist from Germany, currently living and working in Johannesburg, uses historically significant objects that she has stumbled over by chance or that she has deliberately gone out to find to ask questions about the relationship between the past and the present, and the process of moving between them into the future. In her multisensory installation the artist transformed her studio into a collision of objects, video projections, sound and photographs that tie together into a dense reflection of the individual in a globalised world. Her work is a signifier that acts on many levels, inviting viewers to embark on an intensive exploration of their own inner worlds: an exploration of how personal memories and collective archives collide, of how inside and outside dissolve, of how fiction destabilises reality where everything seems possible.
